You can launch it from a menu thingie or from the command line with:

[ggeller@arthur ~]$ gimp

The gimp manual is at http://docs.gimp.org/en/. The manual is constantly updated, so it's best to read it, then re-read it, then re-read it.

tips

fixing printing

To make gimp print on some Linux distributions it is necessary to remove the -oraw option in the Setup Printer dialog.

floating selections

When you make a rectangular selection in a big image copy it, create a new doc, and paste, you get a "Floating Selection". You can anchor it with the "Anchor Layer" menu item in the Layers dialog:

Another way to get around this problem is to use the "Paste as New" command from the edit menu.

screen dumps

gimp is the standard way to get Linux screen dumps. Use File -> Aquire -> Screen Shot...
