Partimage

Note: This page should be titled partimage (all lowercase). It is Paritmage due to technical limitations of Mediawiki.

partimage is a utility for making images of (ghosting) partitions.

Common Usage

It is common to boot the machine to be backed up using something like Knoppix and save the output to a USB drive.

see http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/1375/

# partimage -b -z1 -o -V700 save /dev/hda1 fedora_core2.hda1.partimg.gz

This will create a compressed file of the first partition and, if it is larger than 700 MB, split it into multiple 700 MB files which end with 000, 001, ..., ###. 700 Mb is just enough to put one file on a CD, if you ever want to backup your installation. After executing the above command, I type a description of the image and hit F5 to continue.

FIXME - This page is a stub.

tips

Sometimes when you are in the partimage gui and you hit Enter to choose OK when the choices are OK and Cancel, partimage thinks you want to Cancel. In this case you need to use the space bar to select OK. Very confusing and frustrating - maybe it has to do with which keyboard you are using?
